Immigration fraud – a brief explanation
BACK
02 Aug 2021

Immigration fraud is a type of fraud that you will often hear about in the news and on social media. This is due to the fact that immigration fraud is one of the most common forms of fraud committed. Millions of people commit immigration fraud and each have their own individual reasons for doing so. The UK is one of the main countries that immigration fraudsters target and this is due to the number of benefits and opportunities available to people in the UK. The main reasons why people choose to come to the UK is either to work, study or for family reasons. However those committing immigration fraud will have other reasons in doing so, such as to claim benefits that they are not legally entitled to or to carry out illegal activities. If you require any assistance with immigration fraud or you think that someone is committing immigration fraud then contact ABV Solicitors where our expert fraud solicitor will be able to provide you with friendly and professional advice and deal with all your needs and requirements. If English is not your first language then rest assured that we can still help you, as we have a diverse team of lawyers who will be able to interpret for you.

Ways in which immigration fraud can be committed – sham marriages

There are a number of ways in which you will hear that immigration fraud is being committed. One of the most popular forms of immigration fraud that your fraud solicitor will make you aware of is sham/forced marriage. This concept might be new to you, but this type of fraud has been committed by people seeking to enter into the UK illegally for a number of decades. So how does it work? A sham/forced marriage arises whereby a UK citizen marries a non-UK citizen with dishonest intentions and to enable the non-UK citizen to gain entry into the UK where they would not otherwise be able to do so. The couple will have no intention of forming a real marital relationship. Usually the UK citizen will be incentivised financially to do so and most often will not even know who the non-UK citizen is.

What is being done about sham marriages?

Due to an increase in sham marriages in recent years there are now stringent measures put in place to be able to detect whether the marriage is genuine or if it is indeed a sham. A fraud solicitor will be able to recognise the tell-tale signs of a sham marriage and will be able to explain how the authorities investigate the couple intending to get married in a stringent and thorough fashion to ensure the legitimacy of the relationship. You will often hear stories on the news and on social media about couples who have faced hardships as a consequence of the more stricter rules and if you feel that you have suffered similarly or know of someone who has suffered at the hands of the authorities then contact our solicitor for fraud who will be able to assist you with all your needs and requirements.
